The Neuman Systems Model Education Academy

Purpose: To recognize and honor educators for their contributions to Neuman Systems Model-based education. Projects that warrant recognition are Neuman Systems Model-guided courses and/ or curricula, teaching strategies, educational tools, and/or publications. Education applications may be at the associate, baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral level of education.

Purpose:

The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding contribution to use of the NSM as a guide for nursing education.

Funding:

Up to five $100 Rosalie Mirenda Education Fellow Awards will be made each biennium.

Eligibility:

  1. Have educational and/or experiential preparation in use of the Neuman Systems Model

  2. Contribute to use of the Neuman Systems Model in nursing education

  3. Demonstrate potential for future contributions to the Neuman Systems Model Education Academy

  4. The fellow must agree to make a presentation at the next NSM symposium. Symposium Fees will be waived but the fellow must cover travel expenses. In the event that the Fellow cannot attend the symposium, arrangements can be made by the Fellow to have his/her work presented by a symposium attendee.

  2. Agreement to present at the next NSM symposium: Applicant must agree to present the work if award is made. Note that symposium registration fees will be waived but all other expenses are the responsibility of the applicant. As noted above, in the event that the Fellow cannot attend the symposium, arrangements can be made by the Fellow to have his/her work presented by a symposium attendee.

Lois Lowry Education Grant

Purpose:

The purpose of this grant is to fund an educational project that will lead to development of a new approach to nursing education framed within the NSM.

Funding and Award Cycle:

This is a biennial award of $1,000.00. The work must be presented at the following NSM Symposium (odd numbered years) where the awardee will be formally recognized.

Eligibility:

  1. Have educational and/or experiential preparation in use of the Neuman Systems Model

  2. Contribute to use of the Neuman Systems Model in nursing education

  3. Demonstrate potential for future contributions to the Neuman Systems Model Education Academy

  4. The fellow must agree to make a presentation at the next NSM symposium. Symposium Fees will be waived but the fellow must cover travel expenses. In the event that the Fellow cannot attend the symposium, arrangements can be made by the Fellow to have his/her work presented by a symposium attendee.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION

SUBMIT Electronically

  1. ABSTRACT

    • Provide a succinct and accurate description of the proposed project. Include the overall objective of the project, the methods to be used, and the project’s relevance to Neuman Systems Model knowledge development. Abstract should be no more than 500 words.

  2. NARRATIVE

    • Specific Aims: Include the overall objective or long term goal as well as specific aims, research questions and/or hypotheses that will be addressed.

    • Background/Significance: A critical analysis of relevant literature is expected. This literature must include, but is not limited to, previous work on specific concepts done by researchers using the Neuman Systems Model. Identify and describe the conceptual model, middle range theory, and empirical research methods components of the study. Describe the potential significance of this work both to nursing and to further development of the NSM.

      • Fawcett, J. & Gigliotti, E. (2001). Using conceptual models in nursing research: The case of the Neuman systems model. Nursing Science Quarterly, 14, 339-345.

    • Methods: Include the design of the educational project, the number and characteristics of any project participants, experimental conditions if applicable, instruments used to measure outcomes,  data analysis plan, limitations and/or potential  difficulties, and time frame/schedule of activities.  If human beings are involved, include documentation of Institutional Review Board or Ethics Committee approval and plan for documentation of informed consent.  

  3. HUMAN SUBJECTS/ANIMAL PROTECTION

    • Include documentation that human subjects or animal protection approval has been received from all relevant institutions.

  4. LITERATURE CITED

Agreement to present at the next NSM symposium: Applicant must sign the agreement to present the work at the next NSM symposium, if funded. Note that symposium registration fees will be waived but all other expenses are the responsibility of the applicant. In the event that the awardee cannot present the work in person, it is his/her responsibility to make arrangements for the work to be presented at the symposium.
